Using clay and acrylic paints, grade 8 learners created these architectural windows. They used high relief techniques to build the clay windows and added elements such as plants and birds which gave these pieces a unique touch.
The grade 8 learners were happy to have a visiting artist come to their classs and talk about art as a profession... one such profession as a Graphic Designer. Learners saw that text, color, image and creativity all played an important roll in all the food packages they see everyday. Then they each chose a food item, anything from frozen peas to cookies to cereal... and applied all these elements to their designs.
After learning 1 Point Perspective, the grade 8 learners took on the challenge of 2 Point Perspective and applied it to drawing a street corner. Learners first had to understand the scientific aspect...how the eye and brain see things far away at a smaller scale and then the mathematical application of using converging lines. They were then able to apply 2 Point Perspective to their artwork. For inspiration and reference, they looked at several different pictures of paintings from Vincent Van Gogh where he applied this technique. They were instructed to follow the technical aspects of drawing their street views and once they had the basis, they called be as creative as they wanted... turning their views into quaint villages, busy city blocks or even factories. They used markers and oil pastels to achieve the bold colors and vibrant street scenes.
One Point Perspective was the challenge in this art project, and applying it to create an interior design of a room. Learners used the basic vanishing point and converging lines needed to create a one point perspective design, but then added their creative flair to design a room with tasteful designs, color choices and furniture. Learners were challenged to fill their rooms with furniture (all drawn in perspective) as well as adding attractive features such as windows, doors, carpeting... They rose to the challenge and the results are beautiful.
The perspective of every artist is as different as each artist; but grade 8 learners learned that all artists start with basic one point perspective. One point perspective is technical and detailed. The vanishing point and converging lines made the art session sound more like a math session, but when the art tools and creativity were applied, the results were very artistic. With the theme of "Playing Games" the grade 8 learners applied the bases of one point perspective and created these popping out 3D artworks.
