This was one of my favorite clay projects and the kids were so thrilled with the results. To go along with my students made clay lily pads. They are made in 2 separate pieces. First we created the lily pad. It was a great way to introduce the kids to some clay terminology like a slab, coil. They first rolled out a 'slab' of clay. We used thin wooden blocks on either side of the clay so that I could ensure that they wouldn't roll the clay out too thin or too thick. Once again the kids rolled out a slab, traced and cut out their flower shape. Then they gently lifted the petals to create a flower form. Using different tools around the classroom they added details to the center of the flower. When the pieces were dry they were painted and glazed.
Greetings from Gr. 2 - land! My wee artists finished off these self-portraits as a first project and I'm so excited to share them with you. I began my lesson by drawing the attention of the children to the fact that we are different. We have different skin colors, different colors and different shapes of hair, eyes, nose and lips. I showed the children how to draw a face, where their lips, nose and eyes are set. The art class is spent looking at a variety of portraits. After chatting about those, we were talking about how we might portray our emotions. The children began to work themselves. When the drawing was finished, learners added collage (pieces of fabric) as those portrait’s clothes. Our last step was to recall our study of lines and patterns from the beginning of the school year. Using different colors and types of lines we decorated the background and, ta-da! One adorable self-portrait complete.
