Salma, a modest girl, finds a lantern before her windowpane that she takes, names Loutfi and values. Her journey begins when she loses "Loutfi" and leaves with Salloum, her friend, in a search for it. Along their journey, they meet an elderly couple that collect abandoned old toys so that they mend and place under poor children's windows. Salloum and Salma decide to help this couple use their hands to place happiness in children's hearts. This was the theme tackled in the play, named Karakib, which our preschoolers and Grade 1 learners watched. They learned much after watching it. They found out how important it is to appreciate one's belongings, to take care of them, to value every little object and to help others. They also decided to bring their own toys, dolls and books to school so that they give them for children that urge for a play thing. On Wednesday June 24, 2009, the collected toys were donated to Aamel association that is a humanitarian institution that aids refugees, mostly Iraqis, regardless of their age, sex, social class or religion. Deprived of shelter, clothes and money, the Iraqi refugees are prohibited from working since they do not have legal visas and live in a constant fear of arrest and detention. Iraqi children are thus among the most deprived. This vulnerable state of living required from us a sense of responsibility and empathy. It was worth donating all what our children's hands have collected to Iraqi children so that we place some hope in their hearts. Alternatively, a two week donation campaign was held in the libraries whereby our learners bought the books (donated by Ras Beirut bookstore) for a symbolic price. The book sale revenues, along with those of the food sales and civil days organized by the Intermediate and Secondary learners throughout the 2008-2009 scholastic year, were donated to Green Cedars that works in collaboration with the ministry of Interior to purchase helicopters for forests fire fighting. At last, we thank every person, especially the learners, for their contributions and we hope to always have helping hands, hearts and voices… Nathalie Abou Gharib Extra-Curricular Activities Supervisor
