A Theatrical Experience

Posted on: 10-03-2010

On Thursday, February 19 grade 12 Humanities and Philosophy learners, attended a workshop entitled “Shakespeare Globe Education” at the Lebanese American University. The session was directed by Mr. Adam Coleman, an actor in Shakespeare Globe Theatre. The workshop mainly tackled the Shakespearian theatre and the drama techniques that enabled Shakespeare to combine multiple viewpoints and human actions to produce theatrical experience. Furthermore, Mr. Coleman stressed the importance of communication skills (body language and eye contact), which he considers the basis of all dramaturgical activities. The workshop was in fact a beneficial and interesting experience. We took part in its discussions and activities, most of which were prepared and controlled by Mr. Coleman. He proved to be a challenging actor; though acting can be painful and difficult, it is greatly rewarding and amusing. Not only did Mr. Coleman emphasize the significance of communication on stage, but he also illuminated its importance among social groups, by which one builds a focused and self-confident character which thoroughly aims and achieves. Moreover, we have learned that an actor should be fully involved in the character he/she is playing, all within the facial and bodily gestures. Our face is as equally important as our voice and our body movements, all of which reveal our character and are integral in communication, for our facial expressions speak for themselves. Finally, we learned that in order to reach a certain goal, we must be focused, attentive, and aware of our inner voices always keeping in mind the importance of communication and listening to achieve whatever we seek.
