Life Cycles and Food Web

Posted on: 21-04-2010

First comes a butterfly and lays an egg. Out comes a caterpillar with many legs. Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin, A little chrysalis to sleep in. Oh, oh ,oh wait and see! Oh, oh, oh wait and see! Out of the chrysalis, my oh my, Out comes a beautiful butterfly! Between media and science, our grade 2 learners started their Friday morning by gathering in the auditorium while repeating the butterfly song. Learners identified the life cycle of the frog. They were knowledgeable about the different stages of its cycle starting from an egg, to a tadpole which lives in water and gets oxygen by using its gills, to an adult frog which takes oxygen from its lungs and lives on land. The learners shared with us the stages of development of a butterfly and they acted out its stages while singing. Moreover, our learners felt so confident while explaining what a food chain consists of and how the elements of a food chain related to each other. We ended our presentation by gathering ideas about food webs that according to our learners are overlapping food chains. In addition to that several examples were supplied by the learners. Teachers and grade 2 learners enjoyed the science for fun activity away from the ordinary classroom settings. Lily Abou Haidar Homeroom teacher Grade 2A
