The Twelfth Annual Science and Math Educators Conference (SMEC 12) took place on the tenth and eleventh of April at the American University of Beirut. The conference represents an intellectual and professional forum for teachers and educators from Lebanon and abroad to exchange theoretical and practical ideas regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics and science at all school levels. Beirut Orthodox Schools had a distinctive way of sharing their ideas and experiences at the conference. Our schools had six presentations at the conference that address various educational practices at difference grade levels. Randa Abou Salman, Rana Haidar and Edward Khairallah presented an action research on the use of assisted software to induce conceptual change in the teaching of science. Hala Tayyarah highlighted the importance of writing in mathematics as a hidden element of learning. Rola Sarouja and Salwa Rifai presented a holistic context of teaching science that integrates various curricular and cross curricular competencies. Joelle Badran and Magida Salam pinpointed the importance of integration in the preschool curriculum. Bilal Basha and Manal Malaeb focused in their presentation on the effective teaching that leads to meaningful learning in mathematics. Randa Abou Salman and Diana Sarieddine presented a challenging experience of integrating values in the teaching of Science. The conference, which is organized by the American University of Beirut and sponsored by UNESCO, has not only served as professional area for our schools to express their ideas and values, but also as a professional community which is devoted to the development of education in Lebanon and the region.
