Learning science is an inquisitive aspect of learning where learners raise many questions; “Science Corner” is a traditional event in our schools that has been taking place for several years now. In the Science Corner our learners have the chance to discover and answer their inquiries by preparing a science project where they act as scientists, apply the scientific method, and present it to their teachers and friends. Projects were chosen from each class to compete with each other. This year, “Science Corner” took place on May 3rd during the first and the second recesses. Participants were so excited and enthusiastic while waiting for the judges to pass by and evaluate their projects. They were well prepared and presented their projects with confidence and accepted the challenge with each other. Science Corner encourages communication, curiosity, critical thinking, and integration of scientific concepts with other subject matter such as reading, writing, grammar and spelling, math, statistics and data analysis, computer science (internet search, power point presentation…), and graphic arts, as well as relating scientific methodology to real life. It also builds more positive attitudes towards science and develops experimental research and presentation skills. The benefits of the project go way beyond learning science. Learners become more: confident, mature, disciplined, and skilled. Learners discovered and learned new things from their projects: Karim Itani, Aya Nashawati and Taha Farshukh, Grade 4C, first place winners, found a new way to protect their environment by using solar energy at home and they built a model about “solar house”. Mahmoud Kabalan, Grade 5 B, first place winner, was really proud with the “mechanical hand” he prepared that works on solar energy. Alaa Hasbini, Aya Kassas and Reem Bostami, Grade 6C, first place winners, were so careful while mixing the different chemicals together to show “the formation of foam”. Lea Bassam, Yasmine Kabalan, Diala Ghalayini and Noura Semsar Zadeh, Grade 4 A, second-place winners, presented their project about “fire extinguisher”, showing confidence and understanding of the concept Jad Bakri, Maher Jurdi, Hadi Farhat and Jad Slim, Grade 5 A, second place winners, helped their friends understand Newton’s third law by their “jet racer”. Reina Ghalayini, Yasmina Rajab and Yara Ibrahim, Grade 6B, second place winners attracted us by their model about the “enviro battery” where their art skills were really shown. Bassel Ayoub, Wissam Mokadem, Muhieddine Masri and Mohamad Dbouk, Grade 4 C, third place winners, presented an interesting experiment about “heat absorption”. Tala Hamawi and Maria Beydoun, Grade 5C, third place winners, explained how “fireworks” were formed. Phoebe Shaw and Karen Kassab, Grade 6 A, third place winners, applied what they learned about friction in a very simple experiment called “ magic phone book” using phone books and they presented their project in a power point presentation. Congratulations to the winners and waiting for new ideas next year!!! Salwa Rifai Science Department
