Health Fair for fair health

Posted on: 14-06-2010

In the context of our ongoing effort to integrate the learners’ whole person, mind, spirit, and body in the learning process, SMOC’s upper elementary division hosted a health awareness intervention, aimed at advocating healthy eating habits. A team from the American University of Beirut, lead by notable nutritionist Carla Mourad, took on the task of transforming the Grade 5 learners’ misconceptions on nutrition, physical activity, and dental hygiene, thereby giving momentum to our school’s continuous effort in this respect. Over a lapse of nine weeks, our learners got acquainted with measuring food portions, planning and making healthy breakfasts and snacks- scrumptious ones, as well as increasing their physical activity by ways easily incorporated into their daily routines. The awareness sessions, which were integrated with different subject matters, featured amusing and appetite whetting activities, such as a dance workshop, walking with pedometers, water tasting, and making fun shapes with pieces of fruit, etc. The enjoyable healthy habits campaign was crowned with a health fair organized by our fifth graders and their teachers for parents and friends. The turn up was as impressive as the effort put in by our learners to ensure the flawless organization and widespread satisfaction. The young boys and girls, who were assigned to the different booths, showed admirable organization skills, patience, and sense of fair play. They withstood heat and crowds of players, and made sure that all got their share of laughter, learning, and lovely prizes. In this, as well as all the varied ventures of our schools, the parents’ presence and sustained support was undoubtedly essential to warrant success. The Health Fair was another agreeable occasion to reaffirm that although we might be beating different drums, our learners’ parents and our schools are always playing the same tune.
