The end of year Activity Hour performances were to the likings of most with the melodious music of the flutes, the claves, maracas, and tambourines, the sprightly steps of the ballet, the dance and Taekwondo teams, as well as the moving tales of the story telling and the drama groups. The first enacted the story of a graceful and colorful butterfly who never got along with the greedy and clumsy caterpillar until it realized one sunny spring day that it wasn’t much unlike it! The butterfly learned an important lesson about respecting and accepting others even if they seem different. Most of those who participated in or watched the Activity Hour end shows enjoyed them and learned a lot, except the wolf in the second story. As he lay in bed, after swallowing sweet old grandma, “Chaperon Vert” kept asking why his ears and eyes looked bigger. The weary wolf waited impatiently for her to ask about his teeth so he would jump out of the bed and gobble her; but, in vain! Finally, he got so fed up that he dashed out of the house in a hurry, mumbling angrily about young girls nowadays. As he headed back to the woods, he was caught and taken to court. The jury found him guilty of doing serious harm to “Little Red Riding Hood” and her grandmother. Fortunately, “Little Red Riding Hood” was forgiving: she took pity on the starving wolf and helped him escape! That was hardly the only surprise of the Activity Hour performances. The School “Spirit” of creativity had cast its spell: thus, the magical willingness of the learners from the arts, crafts and environmental clubs transformed used socks, pieces of discarded cardboard and toilet rolls into colorful aquariums and flower tubs as well as perky pets- dogs, rabbits, pigs and… giraffes! The shows ended on the upbeat notes of the LE learners spiritedly singing their love for their school “filling their souls like an ocean”… Rania Maghzal Outreach Unit Supervisor- IEN
