The Advertising Club goes beyond transmission…

Posted on: 25-06-2010

Towards the beginning of the month of June, the artful learners of the advertising club launched a teasing campaign about…well, surely many must have figured out the topic by now. Throughout the year, they had learned about the diverse techniques of delivering messages to masses, including how to choose a timely topic, a catchy slogan, how to address different target audiences, and select wording and typography accordingly. As social problems are unfortunately timeless topics, the learners brainstormed on the innumerable ills in our society. They selected what they perceived as “the root of all afflictions”, in other words, poverty. However, viewed from a youth’s perspective of the Drumbeat of Life, the desolate silence of deprivation is animated by the notes of hope. So in the hope of getting underprivileged people to “rearrange their notes”, and stir social support, the advertising activists set out to raise awareness in their immediate community. They assigned a spokesperson to the doors of a classroom in the Secondary and Intermediate divisions. So what’s the young spokes lady doing hanging on tip toe at the door? Apparently, she’s glancing furtively at the classroom. Has she realized that it’s not just an opening at the door of a classroom, but rather a window into a brighter and broader horizon for her? The slogan says: “She should be amongst them.” How can she rewrite her score, for it to be more in tune with a future of possibilities? How can we all contribute to triggering transformation in her and the many disadvantaged members of life’s orchestra? Rania Maghzal IEN Outreach Unit Supervisor
