Principal’s Welcome Address

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some of you will feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. At SMOC we kick off the school year by the introductory days. Your teachers will introduce themselves and talk to you about all the stuff you'll be doing this year. You will also be given a chance to tell something about yourselves to the rest of the class. You will have also to discover, through different types of activities the Theme of the Year. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know about the Protocol of school life, the Discipline protocol and other ways and means to approach and solve daily school’s issues. You might already know a lot of kids in your class on the first day. But it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did and so will your new friend! Seeing friends you haven't seen in a while can make the first day a good one. The classroom, to which you'll go to each morning, is kind of like your home in the school. Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. This might look unpleasant to many of you, but teachers try to create a setup in which you will discover and make new friends. Teachers will write your names on a class map so that every teacher when entering the class will be able to call you by your name and deal with you on a personal basis. By putting your school uniform you will leave home the outfits you like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on vacation, or had new Tennis shoes to put a spring in your step. Unfortunately here we put a uniform to make sure that we are aware that we are learners and we are entering a place with a different climate. School is like an arena where we fight and strive to make ourselves better. Unfortunately this is not a place for leisure, but we can, if we want, make out of it a place to enjoy evolving in life and discovering our hidden talents and capabilities. But nevertheless with you uniform, you might wear a favorite watch, a new hair band, or a piece of jewelry to show your personal style. . The School will distribute the supplies and books you need to make your journey swift and easy. It can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the supplies you need. We would like you to know that during the whole summer, your HODs, your teachers and all the staff worked hard to prepare your scholastic year and help making out of it a success story for each and every one of you Whatever you put in your backpack, make sure you pack it the night before. This prevents the morning panic when you can't find your homework or lunch box. Speaking of lunch, that's something else that can help you feel good at school — whether it's the first day or the 100th day, try to include a variety of foods in your packed lunch, especially fruits and vegetables. What if you hate school by the end of day one? I recommend giving things some time to sort themselves out — once you get adjusted to the new routine, you'll probably feel better. If those feelings don't fade, talk to your mom, dad, teacher, or school counselor. You are highly recommended to visit and discover all the features of the school’s website “Educalys”. This is an efficient communication tool that will help you know better the school, check the school agenda, consult your grades express yourself and share ideas visit the learners art work galery, and most of all ask questions to your teachers about academic concepts that were not clear to you during class explanation. Here are a few final tips for a fantastic school year: Get enough sleep. Eat a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Use good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning in your homework on time. Take your time with school work. If you don't understand something, ask the teacher. Keep a sense of humor. This is a good way to remind all of us that school is fun! Good luck to you and all the best. FATHER GEORGE DIMAS SEPTEMBER 2011
