The Discipline Protocol

Dear Parents,

The school does not aim through the Discipline Protocol at adopting a mechanical rigid system, but at promoting an educational spirit which builds the personality of a voluntarily disciplined learner. It encompasses the experience which teachers, learners and parents live. This document can be enriched by the daily experiences of teachers, or by studies and researches in the field of education and discipline. The best studies and researches will be chosen for this project to remain flexible instead of being static, enveloped in a cocoon that can not build the man of tomorrow.

Introduction:

School is one of the principal environment in which children and adolescents learn how to live in society”. One other important context is the family. Hence, the collaboration between Educators at school and Parents at home provides the children with the proper environment for growing and gives them the means to deal with the challenges of life. This is why the whole school community (Teachers, Employees, Academic Board and Parents) is responsible and has to abide by the same values that set a frame for the education of the children.

People are considered well disciplined when they behave properly, respecting the rules without being watched. The goal of any effort to discipline children should therefore aim at helping them learn to become “self disciplined”. Rules at school and at home are set to train children on the proper behavior. The proper behavior does not mean obeying orders blindly, but learning to distinguish between what is acceptable and what is not among social behaviors. To explain to the learner why his/her behavior is unacceptable would help him/her understand the situation and show self-discipline. Since rules at school are closely related to learners' emotional and physical safety, we feel it is our shared responsibility, as Educators and Care Providers, to make sure we work side by side with you to guide children and correct their misbehaviors in order to achieve our ultimate goal: self discipline.

Within the frame of the holistic education adopted at our school we aim at building a well balanced person especially in the social and communicative aspects of the character. And since positive behavior is a way of expressing a cooperative and responsible presence, we train our learners to correct their misconduct. This is how they would acquire the proper habits, resulting from an aware conviction, making them obedient and responsible. These habits, which are closely linked to the interdisciplinary skills project, are part of a training program that the educational and administrative teams in our school work on achieving, taking into consideration the age group characteristics and the individual qualities of each learner.

Regulations are thus essential, and abiding by them is a must. It is pointless to transmit to learners discipline behaviors that we do not adopt ourselves or of which we are not convinced.

In this system, our approach of discipline is simple and tangible in order to help the learner assess his behavior by himself with reference to the norms adopted by the School.

Mode of Implementation:

At the beginning of the year, every learner has 25 points (twenty five) and is asked, by complying with rules and regulations, to keep the highest number of points possible until the end of the year.

  • Any misbehavior or infraction to the rules will cause the learner to lose a certain number of points depending on the deed.
  • The learner who loses a certain number of points can regain what he lost if he behaves in a good and positive manner, for a limited period of time.
  • The learner can add points to his account when he performs an unusual positive act.
  • Learners having earned the highest number of points will be rewarded at the end of the year.

The Discipline Protocol is implemented as follows:

Learners, in Elementary, Intermediate or Secondary, are given the same number of points, that is 25 (twenty five points).

Any misbehaviour or infraction to the Protocol of School Life will cause the learner to lose a certain number of points.

The HOD decides on the number of points to be deducted according to the nature and circumstances of the infraction.

The teacher or the responsible that caught the infraction shall inform the concerned learner that a corrective measure will be adopted against him/her after consulting with the HOD. The teacher or the responsible suggests to the Head of Division a certain number of points to be deducted. The final decision in this matter belongs to the HOD. The teacher or responsible who caught the infraction communicates to the concerned learner the final decision, and sets down a corresponding timed plan of action, if need be.

The recurrence of the same misbehavior will be sanctioned by deducting a double amount of points. The HOD and the teacher who caught the infraction shall inform the learner of the final decision and explain the infraction done in order to help the learner not to repeat it.

In the Elementary Division, till Grade 5, the points are deducted after the learners and the parents (according to the age and class) are given a verbal warning.

In Grade 6, the Intermediate and Secondary Divisions, the points are deducted at the moment of the infraction, without any need to a verbal warning, unless the learner has recently joined the school.

When the remaining points in the account drop down to 15 (fifteen points), the learner will receive a written warning signed by the Head of Division. Two copies of the warning will be handed to parents in the HOD's office and in the presence of the class advisor. The parents will sign a copy that would be kept in the learner's file as a proof that they were informed.

A number of points in the account ranging between 15 and 10 reflects a delicate phase in the learner's school life during which he/she should demonstrate, a positive reaction, willingness to improve and should spare no effort to improve the situation.

When the number of points remaining in the account is equal to 10 (ten points) the learner will receive a second written warning signed by the Head of Division. Two copies of the warning will be handed to parents in the HOD's office and in the presence of the class advisor. The parents will sign a copy that would be kept in the learner's file as a proof that they were informed.

Remark :Any warning could be a final one according to the nature of the infraction, even if committed for the first time.

When the account reaches 5, the learner will be deferred to a Disciplinary Council composed of the School Principal, the Head of Division, the School Advisor, the Class Advisor, and the Class Representative in the Learners' Committee (Secondary classes only). The Disciplinary Council will take the appropriate decision regarding the learner. Parents will be informed of the decision through a written letter signed by the School Principal.

In case all points are lost, the learner will be suspended from attending school for the rest of the year. Parents will be informed of the decision through a written letter signed by the School Principal.

Adding points to the account:

The learner who loses a certain number of points can regain what he lost if he performs in a good and positive manner, for a certain period of time, according to the plan of action set. During this period, his will observe his behavior and then the Head of Division will assess the effort made in this respect.

Every learner who is distinguished by a positive behavior or an unusual school work will be rewarded by adding points to his account (this however does not abolish the procedure adopted in elementary classes, which is to give several differentiation diplomas: Best diction, best assistant, learner of the week…).

The School Principal or the Head of Division decide about adding points, either from a personal initiative taken by one of them or after receiving a recommendation in this respect from:

  • The class advisor
  • One of the learner's teachers
  • One of the administrators who are related to school life

Provided that the Head of Division determines the value of the points and the way the learner shall be informed about it (individually, collectively, or at any other level…).

The material meaning of the added or deducted points:

If any positive or negative act that calls for an amendment in learner's account of points occurs:

A-  From KG2 to Elementary 2: papers are used and hanged on the wall inside the classroom on which the added and deducted points are put in front of the name of every learner using significant symbols according to the age level.

B- From Elementary 3 to Secondary 3: A written form is given to the learner or to parents after it is signed by the HOD.
