Grade 1 learners got to witness the life cycle of the butterfly. Ms Kathy gathered around her the curious scientists and showed them how the caterpillars were eating the blackberry leaves and forming their own cocoon. While showing the learners the caterpillars in action, she informed them how the butterflies come out of the cocoon, mate, and the females lay the eggs and keep them at warm temperature to allow development of caterpillars which in turn will form their cocoon in order to develop into butterflies. She stressed the fact that the aim of the exercise was to show learners the life cycle and how to get long threads out of the cocoon. To reach this goal, the cocoons need to be stored at a temperature of 25C in order to stop the developement of the butterflies inside them, break out the cocoons and shred the thread into small pieces. At the end of the activity Ms Kathy gave each learner a cocoon to work at it at home wiht his parents and take off the intact long thread. Grade 1 teachers
